27/05/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- Zambian President Edgar Lungu announced a ban on campaign rallies and large gatherings ahead of elections scheduled for August 12th, stressing that he risks spreading the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Speaking at the launch of the election campaign in the capital, Lusaka, Lungu addressed hundreds of gathered party supporters, saying he would not hold public rallies and asking opposition parties to do the same.

Underlining that protecting people's lives is more important than the election campaign, Lungu said, "As President, I ask the police forces and the Ministry of Health to ensure that the importance taken against Covid-19 is implemented."

The opposition wing claims Lungu banned the rallies because he feared losing the election.
