Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The World Health Organization (WHO) said deaths due to the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) on the African continent have increased rapidly in the last month.
The WHO said in a statement that there have been more than 22,300 Covid-19-related deaths on the African continent in the last month, about 40% more than the previous month.
Casualties are expected to exceed 100,000, the statement said, noting an increase in deaths in 32 countries in the past month.
On the African continent, the second wave began in October 2020 and spread faster and deadlier than the first, the statement said.
WHO Regional Director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti said, "The increased Covid-19 deaths we have seen are tragic, but they are also unsettling warning signs that health workers and the system in Africa are dangerously overset,".
