WASHINGTON POST, EU CRITICISE SAUDI JUDICIARY VERDICT

25/12/2019

Selin ATAY-TDO-The Editorial Board of The Washington Post, of which Khashoggi is one of the authors, has written an article titled "Saudi Arabia's Khashoggi verdict is a mockery of justice" on the decisions taken by the Saudi Arabian judiciary in the Khashoggi case.

“Saudi Arabia has delivered a shameful travesty of justice in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi” quoted from the article that takes sharp stand against the exculpation of Ahmed al Asiri and Saud al-Qahtani, a former intelligence official close to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Selman, in the Khashoggi case

It is pointed out that acceptance of the decision in question by the international community is not only morally wrong, but also dangerous. “This will also send a message to the reckless Saudi ruler (Mohammed bin Selman) that the adventurism of murder is tolerated”,  the article warned the international community.

"Without the support of President Trump, it was very unlikely that Mohammed bin Selman would have prevented justice being served in such a cold-blooded manner.", Trump administration’s position is criticized sharply. The US Congress has been urged to request a detailed report on the murder of the CIA director as soon as possible.

The EU has called for all those responsible to be prosecuted in line with the "principle of transparency" .“In the specific case of the murder of Mr Khashoggi the European Union reiterates the need to fully ensure accountability and prosecution of all those responsible for and involved in his killing on 2 October 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. This has to be based on the principles of transparency, respect of legal proceedings and due process.” The statement said.  On the other hand, it is emphasized that the EU is unequivocally opposed to the use of capital punishment always and without exception.
