VON DER LEYEN ADMITS “MISTAKES WERE MADE” OVER FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19

11/02/2021

İrem UZUN -TDO- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has admitted the EU was late to authorize COVID-19 vaccines and "we're still not where we want to be". "We were late to authorize. We were too optimistic when it came to massive production," the Commission president acknowledged, "and perhaps too confident that what we ordered would actually be delivered on time."

However, von der Leyen has defended the EU's common vaccine strategy as the correct thing to do in the name of European solitary. "I hate to imagine what it would have meant if a few large Member States had secured vaccine and the rest had come away empty-handed. What that would have meant for our internal market and for the unity of Europe!" said von der Leyen on Wednesday morning, speaking before the European Parliament. "It would be economic nonsense. And it would be the end of our community."

The speech was the first time the president addressed the whole European Parliament since the exports control mechanism announced in late January almost re-imposed a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The move was considered a fiasco and provoked immediate condemnation from London, Dublin and Belfast.
