İrem UZUN -TDO- Vandals have defaced hundreds of graves and the war memorial at a cemetery in Mierlo, where 664 British soldiers and one Dutch soldier are buried. Almost every grave stone was spray-painted a swastika and giant random letters. The vandals also wrote "MH17 Lie" on an outer wall of the cemetery, a reference to the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in July 2014, which killed 298 people, of whom 193 were Dutch.
Cemetery administrator Henk ten Westenenk said it was the second time it had been targeted recently."The cemetery was already vandalised last weekend. We had it cleaned on Tuesday and now it is hit again”, he added. Dutch police have tweeted an appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the perpetrators.
European countries have faced a surge in racist and anti-Semitic graffiti in recent years. For instance, in France, 96 graves were daubed with swastikas at a Jewish cemetery in Quatzenheim, northwest of Strasbourg, in February.
