Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The United States Treasury Department announced sanctions on Communications and Information Technology Minister Mohammad Javad Azeri Jahromi after internet access was blocked due to protests in Iran.
The Treasury Department said in a written statement that Jahromi had been placed on the sanctions list because of the internet access barrier imposed throughout the country following the gasoline hike protests in Iran.
In a statement, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said: 'Iran's leaders know that a free and open internet reveals their illegitimacy. That is why he is going to block internet access to suppress anti-regime protests,' the statement read.
United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who asked the Iranian people to share their photos and images with them via Telegram, also announced on his social media account that the Iranian minister had been sanctioned.
