Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has expressed concern about the risk of worsening the current humanitarian situation in northern Syria and the escape of ISIS militants from the prisons they are in.
The UNSC held a closed-door session for the second time this week to discuss developments in Syria. A joint statement condemning Turkey directly was not issued after the UNSC meeting.
However, the United States, China and EU members Britain, France, Germany, Poland and Belgium have all requested Turkey to halt the operation in their statements.
Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, said in a statement that Turkey's operation was not the only problem with Syria. Nebenzia added that the UNSC had not discussed declaring a ceasefire in northern Syria.
The Russian ambassador said the Turkish side had said it would respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity and that they understood Turkey's national security concerns.
