UNITED NATIONS: GREECE'S DECISION TO SUSPEND ASYLUM APPLICATIONS IS UNLAWFUL

03/03/2020

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has declared that Greece's decision not to receive new asylum applications for a month against the influx of refugees at its border is unlawful.

A written statement from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said: "neither the 1951 Convention on the status of refugees nor the EU refugee law have a legal basis for suspending asylum applications."

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on social media last Sunday evening that Greece's National Security Council has decided to increase the level of deterrence at the borders and that no new asylum applications will be received in the country for a month.

Adalbert Jahnz, a spokesman for the European Commission, said the legality of the decision taken by Greece would be examined by the European Union authorities.
