UN COURT SAY IT CAN HEAR CASE BROUGHT BY IRAN TO END US SANCTIONS

05/02/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the highest judicial body of the United Nations (UN), has rejected Washington's objection to the authority in a lawsuit filed by Iran over unilateral sanctions by the United States of America (U.S.).

The Iranian government was subjected to a number of economic sanctions following the nuclear deal signed in 2015, but which the U.S. unilaterally separated from in 2018.

ICJ President Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf said in a statement that the jurors ruled in favour of Iran, saying the claim that "the United States has no jurisdiction" was unjustified.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif posted on his social media account that the decision was a "victory" for Tehran's leadership and that his country has always complied with international law.
