Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy said NATO is the only way to end the war in Donbass.
In his statement, Zelenskiy called for an acceleration of the awarding of a NATO Membership Action Plan to his country.
Zelenskiy said giving Ukraine a NATO Membership Action Plan would be a serious message for Russia.
In a telephone conversation, Zelenskiy and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg discussed the escalating tensions in Donbass and the Russian military's mobility on the Ukrainian borders, the Ukrainian Presidency said in a statement.
Zelenskiy called on NATO member states to increase their presence in the Black Sea.
Zelenskiy stated that they are committed to reforming the military and defense sector, "But only reforms will not stop Russia. NATO is the only way to end the war in Donbass. The NATO Membership Action Plan will be a real serious message for Russia," he said.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg voiced NATO's support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"I called President @ZelenskyyUa to express serious concern about Russia’s military activities in and around Ukraine & ongoing ceasefire violations. #NATO firmly supports #Ukraine’s sovereignty & territorial integrity. We remain committed to our close partnership." Stoltenberg said via his Twitter account.
After these statements, Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov said Kyiv's alliance with NATO would fuel conflicts between pro-Russian separatists and Ukraine.
"This will not contribute to solving Ukraine's internal problem, it will only make the situation worse," Peskov said.
