İrem UZUN -TDO- Britain’s Ambassador to Iran, Robert Macaire, has today returned to Tehran, the diplomat announced in a video posted online. The ambassador initially left the Islamic Republic after a brief detention by security forces last month. Macaire said “I recently returned from London to Tehran. This was an important trip that was planned some time ago”, the diplomat added that he had met with Foreign Minister Dominic Raab and other top officials during his trip.

Macaire was briefly detained last month, which Iranian officials said was because he attended an illegal demonstration that took place amid public anger over Iran's belated admission that its military shot down a Ukrainian airliner, killing all 176 on board. The ambassador said he had attended a vigil for victims of the crash and London claimed his detention was a violation of diplomatic conventions. A prominent hard-line Iranian Muslim leader said at the time that expelling the ambassador would be the best option, and warned that otherwise, loyal supporters of a general killed in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad last month would "chop him to small pieces".

Robert Macaire said he had held meetings with his superiors to discuss Iran-related topics including the nuclear agreement with Iran and INSTEX after leaving the European Union. He said Britain wants to employ the Iran nuclear agreement (JCPOA) dispute resolution mechanism with Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China to find a way forward in the current deadlock and "to address the concerns of the International community about Iran's nuclear program".
