UK ABOLISHES ‘SEXIST’ TAX ON WOMEN’S SANITARY PRODUCTS

03/01/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- On 1 January, the UK abolished the taxes on hygiene products used by women.

A change in the law to abolish taxes on tampon and sanitary pads, which Treasury chief Rishi Sunak committed to in March 2020, came into force after the United Kingdom left the European Union (EU).

“Sanitary products are essential, so it’s right that we do not charge VAT,” said Sunak.

Felicia Willow, director of the Fawcett Society, a non-governmental organization that operates in the fields of women's rights and gender equality, said of the change, "We went a long way to reaching this point, but in the end, we buried the sexist tax practice, which classed hygienic products as unnecessary and luxury products, into the history books,"
