U.S. THREATENS TO RETURN ALL THE UN SANCTIONS IF IRAN’S ARMS EMBARGO WILL NOT BE RENEWED

İrem UZUN -TDO- The United States publicly threatened to trigger a return of all United Nations sanctions on Iran if the UN Security Council does not extend an arms embargo on Tehran. Embargo is due to expire in October under normal circumstances.

U.S. special envoy for Iran Brian Hook wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal about the embargo, saying that "one way or another" Washington would ensure the arms embargo remains. He said the US has drafted a UN Security Council resolution and will press ahead with diplomacy and build support. “If American diplomacy is frustrated by a veto, however, the U.S. retains the right to renew the arms embargo by other means,” Hook wrote.  In order to re-adopt the embargo resolution, it needs nine yes votes and no vetoes by P5 members, namely Russia, China, the United States, France and Britain. However, Russia has already signaled it is opposed to extending the arms embargo.

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reacted to the Hook’s claims and accusations about nuclear deal and resolution, noting that the deal is none of U.S.’ or Brian Hook's business since the they have pulled out of the deal. "It is not unexpected from those who advise people to inject bleaches to treat COVID-19 to claim that they are a member of an agreement from which they have withdrawn," Zarif told reporters.
