İrem UZUN -TDO- President Trump said Wednesday that he has ordered the U.S. Navy to “shoot down and destroy” Iranian vessels that harass American ships. “I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea,” Trump tweeted. Trump’s order came after Iran announced it had successfully launched a military satellite into orbit for the first time. Trump did not provide details about the order, while the White House had no immediate comment.
Iranian Armed Forces spokesman responded Trump’s order by saying the U.S. should initially focus on saving its military from the coronavirus. “Today, instead of bullying others, the Americans should put all their efforts toward saving those members of their forces who are infected with coronavirus,” Abolfazl Shekarchi said, according to Al Jazeera.
The tension escalated between two countries when after gunboats from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy came close to U.S. ships. The Revolutionary Guard confirmed they had a tense encounter with U.S. warships in the Gulf but alleged that U.S. forces sparked the incident. Similar standoffs took place in Gulf, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, which is the world's most important oil transit chokepoint.
