İlknur Şebnem Öztemel – TDO – The White House announced that US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg discussed ways of peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, in a phone call, on Sunday. It was also said that Trump reassured his support for NATO and will take part in the 2017 NATO summit in Brussels.

Additionally, it has been addressed that the leaders discussed how to encourage all NATO allies to meet their defense spending commitments and continue close coordination and cooperation to address the full range of security challenges facing NATO.

The news comes as the Ukrainian forces started deploying additional troops to self-independent states of Donetsk and Lugansk. Trump pledged Ukrainian President Poroshenko to cooperate with other leaders including Russians in order to restore peace in Donbass.

In April 2014, with the sign of EU agreement, Ukraine drawn into a coup d’état, toppled Viktor Yanukovych and a civil war. Moreover, due to instability in the region residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk held independence referendums and proclaimed the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. Now, Kiev is conducting military operation against de facto states and encountering local resistance.
