News Centre – TDO – The 447th anniversary of the conquest of Cyprus, August 1st Day of Societal Resistance, the 60th anniversary of the founding of the TRNC Turkish Resistance Organisation and the 42nd anniversary of the founding of the Security Forces Command were marked with a reception held at Gazi Orduevi, hosted by the Ankara Embassy of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. 

The reception was attended by General Ümit Dündar, Commander of the Land Forces, General Hasan Küçükakyüz, Commander of the Air Forces, Second Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Metin Gürak, TRNC’s Ambassador to Turkey Fazıl Can Korkut and veterans of the Cyprus Peace Operation.

Delivering the first speech of the reception, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Attaché Militaire in Turkey Staff Colonel Akın Örsdemir said that after being conquered by Turks, peace, justice and tolerance had prevailed on the island of Cyprus for 300 years and that after the Ottoman Empire had begun to falter following exhausting wars, Turkish dominance on three continents had come to an end, and rule over Cyprus was ceded to Britain in 1878. Örsdemir said that after this day, and until 1974, dark days had begun for Turks in Cyprus.
