Şimal Çınar –TDO- On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson begins his visit to Latin America which will last for six days and he's expected to rally the region's governments for democratic reforms in Venezuela which is going through its fifth year of political and economic crisis. According to a statement of a senior official of the Department of State said the United States will use "all its political, diplomatic and economic tools to address the situation in Venezuela.” The itinerary includes Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Jamaica.

Prior to his trip, in a speech he gave at University of Texas the Secretary of State spoke about the region and said “For prosperity to take root, we must create the conditions for regional stability. Our approach is holistic: We must address security and development issues side by side.”

Tillerson, in addition for the push of good governance and anti-corruption efforts, will be promoting trade with the United States, which he hailed as a better alternative to China since he said that China seeks only to enrich itself with investment and development projects and advised the regional governments to protect themselves against it. He added that Russia’s presence is also alarming in the region. He said that the US is not seeking for short term deals.

The Trump administration's objective is reported as "to help the Venezuelan people to deal with this economic crisis, but also to restore the democratic order so that they can oversee their future again."
