Görkem ŞEKEROĞLU -TDO- Three people have been stabbed to death in the French city of Nice, police authorities stated. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that one person linked with the attack has been arrested and everything pointed to a "terrorist attack at the heart of the Notre-Dame basilica".
The interior minister Gérald Darmanin appealed to people to avoid the area in the centre of the French Riviera city and said he was convening a crisis meeting at the ministry in Paris.
According to police authorities, one of the victims of the attack had been beheaded and the suspect was detained shortly after the attack.
Nice mayor Estrosi told reporters that one of those killed was the caretaker at the basilica.
The French National Assembly observed a minute’s silence, where Prime Minister Jean Castex had just been giving details of lockdown measures coming into force on Thursday night.
"Without question this is a very serious new challenge that is striking our country," he said, appealing for unity and cohesion.
