Görkem ŞEKEROĞLU -TDO- Three French soldiers belonging to the Barkhane force were killed Monday (28 December) in Mali when their armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in the Hombori region in the centre of Mali, French sources said.
A total of 47 French soldiers have been killed in Mali since France first intervened militarily in January 2013 to assist the Mali government in fighting back Islamist jihadists who had invaded parts of the country.
The president's office said in a statement that President Emmanuel Macron salutes the memory of these soldiers with the greatest respect. President Macron also underlined that France is determined to continue the fight against terrorism.
France's Barkhane force consists of 5,100 soldiers spread across the Sahel region. They have been fighting jihadist groups together with soldiers from Mauritania, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, who together make up the G5 Sahel group.
