İlknur Şebnem Öztemel – TDO – Streets have shaken with mass demonstrations. Thousands of Australians demanded the change of the date of Australia Day, 26 January, as it celebrates the arrival of European settlement to the country. For many Aborigines, it is the’’invasion day’’, the beginning of British colonization in the country and the beginning of their sufferings.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he did not support their views about changing the date of the Australia Day which is celebrated as a national holiday. He added "Everyone is entitled to a point of view but I think most Australians accept January 26 as Australia Day”.
Continent’s real owners were Aborigines but after Europeans came to there, they have been treated as second-class people. Aborigines that survived heavy clashes have only gained citizenship in 1967 and vote . Also, there are still problems about Aborigines in the country like economic inabilities, caused by imperialism. Moreover, life expectancy of other Australians in the country are ten years more than an Aborigine. Besides, it is significant to underline that they make up 27 percent of the prison population, but their population is just three percent of the total population.
