Although article 50 of the fifth section of the Olympics Charter states that “Olympic sites cannot be used for any political, religious or racist propaganda”, modern Olympics are large scale organisations which are used for political propaganda by Olympic athletes, sponsors and most importantly host countries and which have many times featured boycotts, protests, rallies and even terrorist attacks.Looking at the past, from the 1936 Berlin Olympics till the present, the influence of global politics on the Olympics is clear. The fight erupted during a game between Hungary and Russia in 1956, the 1968 Olympics Black Power Salute, the 1972 Munich Massacre and the “Miracle on Ice” of 1980 are just some of the events in which Olympics have turned political, countries have tried to display their political power and international crises have erupted.By Kaan SENERYou can read the rest of the article on our issue of October
