THE ISSUE OF IDENTITY IN THE PROCESS OF EU INTEGRATION

The constant issues that have plagued the half a century long process of EU integration remain unresolved. Looking back, two historical events may be shown as being obstacles in the way of the EU’s economic integration since the Maastricht Treaty (sometimes known as the European Union Treaty) of 1993, upon which the European Economic Community was given new duties and responsibilities and the European Union was founded. The first is lack of agreement among European governments on the draft constitution produced by the European Convention in 2004 and the recently June referendum in the UK upon which the British people voted to leave the EU.
