THE GOVERNMENT IN BELGIUM COULD NOT BE FORMED AGAIN

16/08/2020

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Efforts to form a government continued after the election in Belgium following the dissolution of the last elected government in 2018 failed again.

In Belgium, which has been ruled by an interim government since the general election in May 2019, the far-right Bart De Wever and Paul Magnette of the Socialist Party, appointed by King Phillipe to form a government, have announced they are halting talks for a coalition.

De Wever and Magnette, the leaders of the two largest political groups that have been considering possible coalition options with smaller parties, are expected to meet with King Phillipe next week to abandon their mandate to form a government, as they have not been able to get the measure they want from those talks.

Following this development, the political crisis that has been going on for 605 days will once again be unresolved, with the previous government elected in 2018 tendering its resignation.
