Görkem ŞEKEROĞLU -TDO- China’s navy revealed on Monday (21 December) that an aircraft carrier group led by the newest Chinese carrier Shandong, passed through the Taiwan Strait on its way to routine exercises in the South China Sea. Taiwan mobilised its forces to monitor the convoy.
The Shandong sailed through the Taiwan Strait a day after a US warship had passed through the same strait.
The carrier’s move through the strait comes in the midst of increasing tension between China and Taiwan. Beijing sees Taiwan as part of its territory. Taiwan claims that Chinese armed forces have made almost daily incursions into its airspace in recent months.
Taiwanese Defence Ministry in a statement said six warships and eight military aircraft were sent to observe the Chinese ships’ passage.
“The military has the confidence and ability to protect its homeland, ensure national security and maintain regional peace and stability,” the statement said.
