Şimal Çınar –TDO- Following a suspected chlorine attack in the rebel enclave of eastern Ghouta on Monday, the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday January 23 stated that the Syrian government may still be using chemical weapons. On the same day the UN Security Council gathered at the initiative of Russia for an emergency meeting to discuss the situation with the use of chemical weapons in Syria. Russia proposed establishing an independent UN mechanism to investigate the chemical attacks in Syria.
However according to the statement of the Syria’s Foreign Ministry which was carried by state news agency SANA on Wednesday, the claims were aimed at “obstructing any effort toward finding a way out of the crisis in Syria” and the state does not possess any chemical weapons' arsenal since 2013. SANA said “Syria has always shown cooperation and provided the conditions necessary for an impartial, objective and professional investigation into the use of chemical weapons”.
