Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- In a referendum in Switzerland, which has a population of 8.6 million, voters voted 52 percent adopt the "Yes to the ban on covering the face completely" initiative against Muslims, who make up only 5 percent of its population.
There are about 5.5 million voters in the country, but only more than 2 million of them went to the polls.
Within the scope of the measures implemented due to the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Muslims were banned from wearing niqabs or burkas in a referendum in the country where it is mandatory to wear masks in public places.
The referendum was held on the initiative of a group called the "Egerkingen Committee", which includes members of the far-right Swiss People's Party (SVP).
The Swiss Federal Council and Parliament have advised voters to reject this initiative.
