Before the referendum, the Swiss Federal Secretariat of State for Migration published statistics on foreign nationals living in the country. According to published information, foreign nationals make up 25 percent of Switzerland's total population of 8.5 million. But 65 percent of the migrants living in the country come from European Union countries.
A total of 248 thousand people from non-member countries of the European Union live in Switzerland. In addition, the total number of immigrants from the continents of Africa, America and Asia was also announced to be about 365 thousand.
