İrem UZUN -TDO- According to the statement of provincial officials, a suicide bomber on a motorcycle targeted a campaign rally by Ashraf Ghani, the president, in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, missing the president but killing at least 26 people and wounding 40.Abdul Qasim Sangin, head of Parwan hospital, said children were among those killed and there were fears the number of victims could rise.
His campaign chief Hamed Aziz said that the president was present at the time of the explosion but was safe and unharmed. Mr. Ghani was inside a fortified compound at least a half-mile from the blast. The attacker detonated the bomb at 11:40 a.m. as people were lining up to undergo security checks at the first entry gate to the compound. Mr. Ghani had arrived the place earlier by his helicopter. Just hours later, an explosion occurred near the US embassy in Kabul and at least three people died.
