İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-12.07.2017- According to Independent News, The White House mistakenly referred Chinese President Xi Jinping as the president of Taiwan.

After hours of  discussing trade and the nuclear threat caused by the  North Korea with Mr Xi at the G20 summit in Hamburg, US President Donald Trump  told his ‘’ wonderful relationship’’ with Jinping. A few hours later, White House released an official statement referred Jinping as president of “The Republic of China” which is the official name for Taiwan.

Regarding the event, Patrick Chovanec, a former professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, reminded President George Bush’s gaffes. He tweeted as “I remember when Bush Admin announced the anthem wrong, but this is pretty bad”.

In 2007 Bush’s team played Taiwan’s national anthem when Chinese ambassador attended the opening ceremony of a China-financed stadium on the island of Grenada in the Caribbean.

Moreover, Chris Lu who worked with former president Barack Obama tweeted: “Ouch. White House just referred to Xi Jinping as leader of Republic of China, which is Taiwan. #AmateurHour.”

It is argued that White House unconsciously made such a problematic statement but there are several examples of American ‘ accidents’ that gave significant messages to other states.  It is important to evoke that shortly after his presidential inauguration, Trump sparked a potentially damaging diplomatic row with China after speaking to Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen. Additionally, in December, he said USA has no obligation to sustain its ‘One China’ policy. Following, tensions between two powers increased. Only after China’s changing role to support global economy and free trade became more visible North Korea’s common missile tests, Trump administration’s  perspective to China has changed. Even, Washington tried to ‘persuade’ Chinese officials to cut its economic ties with Kim Jong Un’s regime which is the biggest importer of North Korean coal. Besides, as Bush and Trump have some commonalities to be the most interesting and debatable figures in the house, it is possible that, Trump administration may wanted to break the ice between USA and China in this way. Why not?
