Görkem ŞEKEROĞLU -TDO- Several people have been killed and injured in a shoot out in central Vienna Austrian police say.
An extensive security operation was launched and police have urged people to avoid all public places in the area and not to use public transport.
Police said offenders armed with rifles had fired shots from six areas near the Seitenstettengasse synagogue about 8:00pm Monday local time.
The leader of the Jewish community Oskar Deutsch said on twitter that it was not clear whether the synagogue was targeted as it was closed at the time of the attack.
"At the moment I can confirm we believe this is an apparent terror attack," Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told Austrian broadcaster ORF. Mr Nehammer said some people were thought to have been killed and the several seriously injured, including a police officer. According to a number of Austrian media sources up to seven people might have been killed in the attack.
