SCOTTISH NATIONAL PARTY PROMISE INDEPENDENCE REFERENDUM AFTER ELECTION WIN

11/05/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP), which won its fourth successive victory in Scotland's elections, has promised an independence referendum for the aftermath of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

"The Scottish people have made their will clear," Sturgeon said in a speech, adding that only a court ruling, not Prime Minister Boris Johnson, could stop the referendum.

Sturgeon said Johnson's "They want to tear our country apart" rhetoric was irresponsible.

The pro-independence SNP won the biggest victory in its history in the election on 8 May.

Under UK law, a referendum requires the prime minister's approval.
