Selin ATAY-TDO- Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced she wants to hold an independence referendum for a second time next year to leave the UK.
Nicola Sturgeon, who is also the leader of the pro-independence Scottish National Party as well as the prime minister's post, has indicated that she wants to hold a referendum on the issue in the early months of 2021. Sturgeon said the survey showed the Scottish people wanted independence.
"If the people of Scotland want to be independent, we need to give them this opportunity sooner rather than later. Our new parliament is also moderate on this issue,” Scottish Prime Minister Sturgeon said.
In the last 14 surveys conducted on a large scale in Scotland, the vast majority of Scots had expressed their opinion that they wanted independence. According to the results of the survey, the proportion of those who wanted independence in the young population was higher than in the adult population.
In the 2014 independence referendum in Scotland, 55 per cent of the public voted to remain in the United Kingdom. However, with Britain's exit from the European Union through Brexit and the failure of the London government to fight Covid-19, the number of those seeking independence among the Scottish people has risen considerably.
Scotland's independence is considered the biggest blow the UK will take after Ireland, which declared independence almost a century ago. Scotland, located in the north of the island of Great Britain, has been ruled by the same king as the English since 1603. Scotland had become part of the United Kingdom, along with Wales and England, by the treaty it signed in 1707.
