Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The decision to abolish the flogging punishment for certain crimes committed in Saudi Arabia was passed by the General Commission of the Supreme Court in April, which will be replaced by jail time, fines or both.

A statement from the Supreme Court said: "the decision was taken under the direct supervision of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Selman and the continuation of human rights reforms under the rule of King Selman."

A statement on the matter also came from Awad Alawad, the chairman of the Human Rights Commission (HRC). Alawad said in an interview with the Reuters news agency that this reform was a crucial step on Saudi Arabia's human rights agenda.
