News Centre – TDO - Rwanda’s Ambassador to Turkey Williams Nkurunziza has hosted a reception at the Ankara Hilton Hotel to mark the 24th anniversary of Rwanda’s independence.

The reception was attended by Minister for the Youth and Sports Dr Osman Aşkın Bak and many representatives of diplomatic missions.

Following the singing of the national anthems, Rwanda’s Ambassador in Ankara Nkurunziza said that President Kagame had spearheaded his country's struggle for independence and that the Rwandan people felt unending gratitude for Kagame for his role in the struggle for independence. 

Ambassador Nkurunziza said “As we celebrate this important day, we want to thank the Turkish people and government for the friendship and solidarity they have shown. We value the relations between Rwanda and Turkey. President Kagame has already conveyed his congratulations and good wishes for the re-election of President Erdoğan and restated his trust in him.

In his speech, Minister Dr Osman Aşkın Bak congratulated Rwanda’s national day on behalf of the Turkish government and people.

Stating that they were well aware of the importance of this day which symbolises the end to the great tragedy experienced in Rwanda in 1994, Bak continued “As a rising actor in Africa, we see Rwanda as a great actor in Africa.”

Minister Bak said that they much admired the impressive social and economic developments in Rwanda under the leadership of President Paul Kagame and that Kagame had made positive contributions to the African Union, of which he became the assembly chair this year."

Following the speeches, Ambassador Nkurunziza made a present of paintings and books to Minister Bak. The reception included traditional Rwandan dancing and refreshments.
