Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Inmates at a prison in Thailand have reportedly rebelled and escaped, citing rumors that a new type of coronavirus Covid-19 has been detected in some detainees for desertion.
Local officials said some detainees at Buriram prison, which holds about 2 thousand prisoners, had sparked a riot amid rumors of sightings of a Covid-19 case in the prison.
Several people were injured in the incident, officials said, adding that part of the prison was set on fire during the riot.
However, 7 prisoners who had escaped during the riot were reportedly captured. It is not yet known if there were any other deserters.
In Thailand, the number of cases identified as Covid-19 increased to 1388 and 7 people died due to the outbreak.
