People gathered in front of Buckingham Palace in London, the capital, where long queues formed.
Across the country, where flags were lowered at half-mast, gunfire was fired from Woolwich Barracks and London Castle in south-east London at 12 pm local time.
In Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, and Gibraltar, 41-gun salutes were fired to commemorate Prince Philip.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement that the public was asked to observe the measures implemented to combat the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, while commemorative events should be monitored on television.
The funeral is scheduled for April 17.
