In his brief speech, Pope Francis said that the Catholic Church celebrated Sunday as international sea day, and continued his speech: "the Sea takes our thoughts a little bit away, to Istanbul. I think about Hagia Sophia and I'm in a lot of pain."
A reaction to the Hagia Sophia decision came from the World Union of Churches. The World Union of Churches, made up of 350 churches representing different branches of Christianity, sent a letter to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the decision to change the status of Hagia Sophia.
