İlknur Şebnem Öztemel – TDO – Environment and Natural Resources Secretary of Philippines, Regina Lopez, ordered the shut of some mines, saying they were operating in watersheds. Also closure of five other mines was suspended. Philippines are the top supplier of metal and the closed mines account for half of the total production of nickel ore. It is expected that shutdowns will affect 1.2 million people and some vowing to overturn the ruling.
Philippine mining industry body argued that minister's decision to close over half of the country's mines and suspend others is "illegal and unfair," and jeopardizes an industry that provides large amount of taxes and fees to the government.
The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines stated that "She violated due process - which is an inherent part of the rule of law – and did not give proper notice by consistently refusing to release the results of the audit to the affected parties".
It has been added that there would be a "widespread chaos" in her department following her decision to close some mines, which was not a recommendation of her audit team.
