Selin ATAY-TDO- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called on Germany to mediate negotiations based on international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.
The Palestinian Authority President dialed German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Palestinian official news agency reported.
Mahmoud Abbas shared information about the initiative, that voiced at the United Nations Security Council, "to organize an international peace conference and establish a multilateral international mechanism involving the Middle East Quartet (Russia, the United States, the European Union, and the UN)"
Palestinian President Abbas called on Germany to join the mechanism as a mediator for negotiations based on international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Abbas also expressed his appreciation for Germany for its commitment to the two-state solution based on international law. Merkel stressed that her country would continue to support peace on the basis of a two-state solution and would continue its role to reach that goal.
Earlier, Merkel backs two-state solution in meeting with Abbas on 29 august 2019. Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germany continues to believe a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians is the only way for both peoples “to live in peace and security.”
Abbas also stressed the importance of Germany’s role in the Middle East and thanked the country for its financial support for Palestinians’ health services, education and the strengthening of civil society.
