ONTARIO FINANCE MINISTER RESIGNS FOLLOWING HIS SECRET PANDEMIC HOLIDAY

02/01/2021

İrem UZUN -TDO- Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips has resigned from his key role in cabinet over his secret vacation to a luxurious Caribbean island as the COVID-19 pandemic ran rampant in the province.  "Today, following my conversation with Rod Phillips, I have accepted his resignation as Ontario's Minister of Finance," Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a statement.

Early Thursday morning, Phillips landed at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport after vacationing in St. Barts since December 13.  In a press conference held at the airport, Phillips apologized for the trip, calling it a “significant error in judgment,” and a “dumb mistake.”  “I know that I disappointed a lot of people and I hope people will appreciate I disappointed no one more than myself,” he said.

“At a time when the people of Ontario have sacrificed so much, today's resignation is a demonstration that our government takes seriously our obligation to hold ourselves to a higher standard,” Ford said. The premier said he has asked Treasury Board President Peter Bethlenfalvy to assume the role of minister of finance and deliver the government's 2021 Budget. “This appointment will help ensure economic stability in the months ahead, as we support Ontario families, workers and businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic, and as we chart our path to long-term economic recovery,” Ford said.
