OBAMA OFFICIALLY ENDORSES JOE BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT

15/04/2020

İrem UZUN -TDO- Former President Barack Obama, who has remained neutral for the entirety of the 2020 Democratic primary, endorsed his former vice president, Joe Biden, on Tuesday. The endorsement came one day after Bernie Sanders offered Biden his endorsement during a livestream. Sanders ended his campaign for president last week, leaving Biden as the apparent nominee.

Obama, in a lengthy video taped on Monday, lauds Biden's character and resilience, touting him as the right kind of candidate to lead the country through a crisis like the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Obama also highlights the stakes of the 2020 election by arguing Trump and Republicans in the Senate are solely interested in power, not making progress for Americans. "If there's one thing we've learned as a country from moments of great crisis, it's that the spirit of looking out for one another can't be restricted to our homes, or our workplaces, or our neighborhoods, or our houses of worship," Obama says in the over 11-minute endorsement video. "It also has to be reflected in our national government". While Obama’s lengthy statement never addressed President Donald Trump by name, the remarks centered around the need for strong, principled leadership in the White House – especially in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Obama remains an incredibly popular figure among Democrats and had previously declined to publicly discuss potential endorsements in the primary race. Known as a powerful campaigner, Obama's role is crucial for Democrats in the November faceoff against incumbent President Trump. Biden, who has promoted himself as the candidate most closely aligned with Obama's values, has talked about "my buddy Barack" throughout the primary campaign but has said he specifically requested his longtime ally not endorse during the primary process.
