With Barack Obama taking office, the focus of American foreign policy shifted significantly from the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific region and specifically focused on China. Many of the features of the Asia-Pacific are a draw for powerful states like the USA. The main reasons may be listed as follows: The region houses more than half of the world’s population which makes it a large market for the US economy. India, which has the second highest population in the world is also deemed the world’s largest democracy. The worlds second and third largest economies, China and Japan respectively are also in the region. So is Indonesia, which has the highest Muslim population in the world.
