Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The European Parliament's new rapporteur for Turkey was Spanish Nacho Sanchez Amor, 59, of the Social Democratic group. Amor took over from the European parliamentarian Kati Piri, who held this post for 5 years and is known for his reports criticizing Turkey harshly.
Nacho Sanchez Amor, a member of the European Parliament Sub-Commission on Human Rights, spoke of Mayors expelled from their posts in Turkey during his speech at the General Assembly of the European Parliament on 19 September. Sanchez Amor said mayors elected by citizens in Turkey were expelled from their posts without any legal process and it was clear that the Turkish penal system was being used to silence political criticism. Amor said Turkish people are worried about what is happening in the country. The Spanish rapporteur added that he believes the European Union should reconsider its working mechanisms in Turkey.
