MYANMAR MILITARY VOWS TO ABIDE BY CONSTITUTION AMID COUP FEARS

31/01/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- Myanmar's military has said it will protect the country's constitution, comply with the constitution and act according to the law, amid concerns that the armed forces may attempt to seize the administration.

The statement was perceived as a step that could alleviate concerns about the coup attempt.

The statement came after United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as well as some Western embassies in the country, raised concerns that there could be a re-attempted intervention by the armed forces in Myanmar, which was ruled by the military for 49 years after the 1962 coup.

A statement by the Myanmar military, also called Tatmadaw, said Commander-in-Chief General Min Aung Hlaing's statement that the constitution could be dissolved was misinterpreted.
