İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO- It has been asserted that new American administration  consider to classify 89 years old Muslim Brotherhood which has millions of followers in the Middle East, under the list of international terrorist entities, to praise its allies in the Gulf.

Actually, U.S. President, Donald Trump, has always suspicions about the organization but he did not provide a clear plan about ongoing political disputes and wars rather than focusing on counter-terrorism.

However, it has been argued that this would make the problematic situation in the region worse. Issandr El Amrani, an analyst works with the International Crisis Group based in Morocco, said “It could destabilize countries where anti-Islamist forces would be encouraged to double down. It would increase polarization”. Also, a leaked report of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) indicates that isolating the Brotherhood would serve only to empower jihadist groups and it would pass legal muster.

In case of a re-categorization of Muslim Brotherhood,  there will be more questions to solve in Jordan , Tunisia and Morocco because  followers of the organization constitutes  small but a significant bloc in Jordan’s parliament, Ennahda party won wide praise for its democratic engagement and moderate stance in Tunisia and  prime minister must be considered as a criminal in Morocco.

Muslim Brotherhood was established in 1928 byHassan al-Banna. In a 1997 study for Harvard International Review, Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammad Ma'mun El-Hudaibi, said  that organization has two main goals as ; introduction of Sharia as the basis controlling the affairs of state and society and working to achieve unification among the Islamic countries and states, mainly among the Arab states  and liberating them from foreign imperialism. The Egypt-based organization was blamed for a slew of violent acts including the assassination of Egyptian Prime Minister Mahmud Fahmi al-Nuqrashi in 1948, shortly after he had ordered the dissolution of the Muslim Brotherhood. After the sad event, organization became underground. Following the U.S. led invasion of Iraq in 2003, organization had an enormous increase in the number of membership application. In 2005, it won 20% of the seats in Egypt's parliamentary elections. Afterwards, in 2012, Mohamed Morsy, candidate of the organization won the elections and became the first democratically elected leader of Egypt. Later, he forced to resign as a result of a coup d’état, conducted by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in 2013.
