İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-14.06.2017- British Prime Minister, Theresa May, apologised for her disappointing election campaign and admitted that she is the person who got Britain into this “mess’’.
In the meeting of the 1922 Committee, representing the voice of Tory backbenchers, she said: “I’m the person who got us into this mess – and I’m the one who’s going to get us out of it”. She accepted her breakdown and took the “full responsibility”.
It is expected that May will try to establish a new government with the help of the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). However, the consensus between the two sides is not for sure. Additionally, the risk of a delay in Brexit talks emerged as there is no powerful government in the UK yet. Probably, UK may not be able to ‘’divorce’’ with EU by 2019 as it was supposed to be. Even there is no guarantee for Queen’s Speech which is a basic test of a British government’s credibility, to happen.
Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said “Theresa May certainly did get us into this mess. She promised strong and stable, but we’ve ended up with Laurel and Hardy government.
Meanwhile, it is reported that there is an enormous rise in the number of British people that changed their nationality. To exemplify, the number of British citizens that became German citizens increased 361% in 2016. According to a recently released data by German Federal Statistics Institution, 2865 Brits became German citizens while the number was only 622 in 2015. It is expected that the numbers will get bigger unless British government erase concerns from people’s mind.
