LOCKDOWN IN THE NETHERLANDS EXTENDED UNTIL MARCH 15

Selin ATAY-TDO- As part of measures to combat the outbreak of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) in the Netherlands, the lockdown restriction, which came into force on January 23 across the country, has been extended until March 15.

Dutch PM Mark Rutte held a press conference jointly with Health Minister Hugo Mattheüs de Jonge. At the press conference, it was announced that the curfew restriction imposed between 21.00 and 04.30 was extended for the third time and that the new date was March 15.

PM Rutte noted that the number of cases tends to rise again due to the mutated and faster-spreading type of Covid-19, first detected in the UK. The prime minister also announced the start of a possible third wave. Although there has been an increase in the number of cases, the Dutch PM announced that some measures have been relaxed to address the increase in loneliness and negative effects on mental health, especially in young people and the elderly.

Health Minister de Jonge said the delay in Covid-19 vaccines, which the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will deliver to Europe, would create a difficult situation. The Health Minister also expressed that AstraZeneca's complex structure makes it difficult to implement agreements, saying "terms change every 3-4 days, it's a maddening situation."
