İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO- 19.05.2017 Leaders could not reach a solution about Cyprus in their five hour lasting meeting.  It seems everybody trust on special adviser of UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide. It is expected that Eide use shuttle diplomacy to persuade each side to go to Geneva talks.

The first round of Geneva talks was started in January. Each leader rejected other’s offer for upcoming second round of Geneva talks. Each side accused the other about the fail of the attempt.

Southern Cyprus insisted on drawing bordersfirst, then talk about security, bureaucracy and economy of the state, while Northern Cyprus argued that it would be better if they decide on a package about structure of the future state, then defining borders.

After the meeting, President of Northern Cyprus, Mustafa Akıncı, said ‘’ No Turkish leader could accept this’’. On the other hand, leader of Southern Cyprus Anastasiadis called their proposal ‘’very positive and constructive’’.

It is significant to remind that in previous meetings, officers locked the maps in UN building and agreed to debate borders last.
