İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-01.07.2017- Trump’s Travel Ban imposed on six Muslim majority countries went in to the operation after latest decision of the supreme court.

On Monday, the Supreme Court partially lifted lower court injunctions against Trump's executive order that had temporarily banned visas for citizens of the six countries. The court ruled that Travelers with a “credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States” could be exempt from the ban.

From now on, it is necessary for visa applicants to have ‘’bona fide relations’’ which means they need to have mother, father, adult sibling, husband/ wife or fiancee living in USA. Grandparents, aunt, uncle, nephew or other relatives are not included in this sense.  Also, regarding the new rules will be applied on government's diversity lottery which randomly awards 50,000 green cards annually to people from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.  As this is a very rare possibility for visa lottery winners to have relatives or jobs on American soil, the future of the program is blur.   Generally, winners in the diversity lottery only need prove they were born in an eligible county and have completed high school or have at least two years of work experience.

David Miliband, president of the International Rescue Committee, called the situation “alarming,” “confusing” and “inhumane”. He said “The banning of grandmothers – of unaccompanied children – from America’s shores is a disgrace”. He added “Doubly so when America is a breaking a promise we have made to safeguard them”.

Moreover, Tammy Duckworth, a Democratic senator from Illinois, stated   “This attempt at implementing the president’s Muslim ban is just as illogical, discriminatory and un-American as the first two attempts”. He acknowledged “How can President Trump credibly say that some relatives are ‘bona fide’ relationships while grandparents and grandchildren are not? This disgrace will not make our country safer. It betrays the American values those of us who served in uniform fought to defend”.

Despite mass criticisms, US President Donald Trump declared that ‘’it was a victory for American security’’. He tweeted as “Great day for America’s future Security and Safety. We must keep America SAFE!”.

What’s ironic here is, according to a study of  Cato Institute, about terrorist attacks in the United States over the 40 years from 1975–2015 concluded that nationals from the six countries ( Somalia, Yemen, Libya, Syria, Iran and Sudan) were not responsible for any of these fatal attacks on US soil.

Additionally, it is significant to remind that Trump administration broke decades long tradition in the White House to host an iftar for Muslim Americans during Ramadan. Therefore, so-called security strategies are very weak to explain what’s going on in the US nowadays.
