Serhat TUNAR -TDO- UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, whose party suffered a major defeat according to exit polls, thanked his constituents in a statement to the press.

Corbyn said it was a night of much frustration for his party. The Labour leader said they had presented a statement of hope in the election campaign.

Jeremy Corbyn, who claims Brexit has polarised the election debate too much, has announced he will step down from his post and will not stand at the head of his party at the next election.

But Corbyn, who has not given a specific date for his resignation, is expected to lead the party shortly thereafter.

The Conservative Party, led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, finished the election in first place with 368 seats, according to polling exit polls. Thus, the Conservatives passed 326, which was an absolute majority, and came back to power alone after 2 years.

Johnson's biggest rival, The Jeremy Corbyn-led Labour Party, came second with 191 seats. The Labour Party suffered one of the heaviest defeats in its history, losing 71 of the 262 seats it won in 2017.
